Nature has strange ways of reminding one about things
forgotten. What better way to understand it than being at the receiving end,
experience it. No, I am not talking
about remembering birthdays, anniversaries. If you are married or have a
girlfriend, you will forget those only once. I don’t refer to people in heaven
either. What good can it be to them, if you remember them, than being bothered with
thoughts of a meaningless life (in comparison) that was spent on earth?
Bachelor life away from your family can be pretty tedious. Especially
if you are left stranded in a society of families, and after having lived in
comfort, a good part of your past life, being the father, the husband and taken
good care of. You miss your morning cup of tea, the good-bye kiss, the sumptuous
office lunch, the warm and laid back evenings, when all you had to do was to
watch some TV, listen to some monotonous complaints, gossips and demands - I even
miss them, if you ask me. My God, all the rest of the chores were looked after
by the missus!
And now I live my life, all to myself, on my own. Studio
apartment. Nice view from the balcony. No unwanted visitors, nowhere to go
unintended. Cook when you want to cook. Wash when your wardrobe goes out of
stock. Drink life to the fullest (soul inspiring ones, those), no one to ponder
you with ‘this is the last. Eh!’ Procrastinate all other deeds until the eleventh
hour - your phone gets cut, final electricity bill arrives and your place
stinks with garbage!
Exactly! I was coming to that. That is where nature’s baton
fell on me. I always wanted to keep my small studio clean and devoid of dirt
and dust. Always, it is almost three weeks now. Always I promised to do it the
next day, or next week, not later than that. And then! The weekend came. I told
myself ‘relax, you have two full days.’
Friday is only the first day. Let us relax a bit. Watch a movie.
Get up to date on the facebook. There’s still time. Stay late and watch another
movie. Saturday! By the time the sun was up, Kohli & Dhoni were giving England
some lessons in patience at Nagpur. I have to give them company. Let’s put the washing
on. Cleaning … let’s do it another day!
I duly switched the washing machine on. Put the clothes in,
selected the water level, filled detergents, fabric softener, and then left it
to the machine to take care of my clothes. And was with Kohli and Dhoni until
tea (at Nagpur).
There’s no sound more soothing than that of running water.
It was so comforting this Saturday, that by the time I realized that it was
filling my floor, it was already too late take some corrective measures. I had
forgotten to connect the machine’s outlet pipe to the drain hole!
Damage control lasted the whole afternoon and I came out
victorious, clean and worked out. On the positive, that will save my jogging for
a couple of days at least!
